Five Month Old Parents

Wowzers people are not kidding around when they say that time flies and they grow so fast! We are now five months into this parent thing and still redefining our roles as mother and father. Fortunately Owen is the easy part of this parenting thing! He is the spice in our lives. Still all smiles and giggles even when he was teething he did not fuss much for what was happening (yup started teething at 3 months, he’s got two!)

He has rolled over once on his own and can now bring his squishy feet to his mouth along with anything else he can get his hands on to investigate. He loves his bouncing bopper chair and would launch himself into the air if he wasn’t strapped in. His desire to be moving is very strong; he has begun to reach towards things out of our arms and onto the floor and his tummy. He wiggles his feet around trying to scoot if it weren’t for his belly. He has out grown 3-6 month clothes and out grown his infant car seat already. We are ready to find that perfect stroller that packs up really small????? We are beginning to understand what baby gadgets work for us and what ones are a joke and what new gadget we would like to find to combine our needs.

As parents we have turned on our blinker and are merging back onto the freeway of life. We find ourselves ready to tackle stuff in the outer world again. Time is a luxury and things don’t require so much analyzing and reflecting in order to make perfect sense….. some things just are.
I have read tons of books already while breast feeding. Some have some really good advice some not so much. One that I am reading now called, The Mother Dance states something like when a women is in labor she goes into a deep state from which she does not completely emerge from until months after the birth. I definitely understand that statement and want to add; that when you do start to emerge you are not the same person you thought you knew and understood. It seems the things that I enjoyed before don’t quite match up with me and friendships I have known are harder to relate to and shifting into new chapters. I use to think that to become a mother I would lose a part of myself, now I know that I gained a part of myself that I never knew I had.

We knew our lives would change drastically once we had a child (hence the reason we waited so long). However you cannot fully comprehend all the aspects that it will affect until your living it. I also look back at statements or advice that I tried to offer friends with families; boy was I in left field to think that I had a clue with all kinds of ideals to share. So thanks for all your kind and polite nods at me when I was offering advice from my luxury time filled lifestyle…but I get it now! There are no absolutes …except….love and change that is.

I also keep reminding myself that none of these stages are forever and in-fact just when we start to feel like we have a grip on what is happening it is all going to shift into a new stage so we might as well let go of any self fulfilling sense of control and learn how to dance around with life. I no longer need to be self disciplined with projects and plans I need less time being so serious and more time with simple silliness (Owen gives me that) Do it yourself days are starting to become a thing of the past I am beginning to see the value in paying someone to do something………it is well worth the time and energy saved!

I guess that is enough ramble from the inside world of my mind…point being we are parents! We are learning about our new roles and falling deeper and deeper into love with Owen every day. He is the glue that turned us into a family. We are grateful to have such a fun playful son who makes everything we are learning to do as parents so worthwhile and then some. Having a child fills your life of a void you did not know was there…your life becomes bigger than life ever known before. Best of all you have someone who will play giggle and grow with you together as a new family. Life is a crazy amazing thing and then to generate life is an even crazier and more amazing thing! We are humbled and glad to be in the parent club (something I never thought I would say).

Oh yeah…..here is what is happening in the outside world…Tim shaved his head in honor of his mother who just finished up her chemo treatments! As new proud home owners; we painted the kitchen (thanks for your help Erika) and built an outdoor shed (thanks for being the Maestro on this job John!). We also took a quick trip to a nice cabin on the beach, as it turns out Owen likes to travel to new places too! And stay tuned for more information on the mom and baby dance class I plan to teach and the future development of a children’s bookstore to be owned and ran by me, Owen’s Mom!
Owen, we love you and you sure make our hearts skip a beat on this Valentine’s Day! Nat and Tim

P.S. Yes I am proud to be a bias Mom. I think that my son is soooo damn cute!
